Mysterious Japanese Rash
See the mysterious japanese rash. (link broken for some reason - check later)
Well, I'm posting this not to gross people out, or deter them from traveling; but as a helpful resource to fellow travellers coming back from Japan. Two different US doctors have 'never seen anything like it before' -- but apparently it is quite common to 'gaijin' (foreigners) travelling to Tokyo for an extended period of time. So this strange rash started to develop after 8 days in Tokyo on my arm -- small slightly red bumps that are quite itchy. Anyway, I got back state-side 2 days later, and the rash began to spread down my arm, to my side, and eventually all over my limbs and torso. Now it is 5,6 days since I have first seen it; and I'm a big ithcy mess. I was worried it was some kind of bedbug or scabies (eeeew), but my doctor diagnosed it as an unknown 'topical' allergy to something Japanese. My best guess right now is the laundry detergent used to wash my clothes or perhaps the pollution in the air. The only thing that has quenched the itch is some doctor-prescribed zyrtec. They also set me up with a round of steroids that will supposedly stop the rash from spreading and should have it clearing up in a couple of days. I'll contine to post comments on this entry and comment on how the steroids are working out, hope this helps someone!
